What we collect
When you create an account, we collect your first name, last name, email address, contact number, and account type (individual or business — with a company name for business accounts). When you report stolen gear, we collect the item description, serial number, and the incident details you provide (date, location, police report number). When you check a serial number, we log the serial searched and the result. If you upload a photo to check its embedded shutter count or serial, that photo is read entirely in your browser — it is never uploaded to or stored on our servers.
How we use it
We use this information to operate the stolen-gear registry: matching serial numbers against theft reports, showing your dashboard and alerts, verifying reporter accounts, and investigating tips submitted by other users. Your contact details (email, phone number) are never shown on a public stolen-item result — only a verification badge (your first name if you opt in, your company name for business accounts, or “Verified Member”) is shown.
POPIA compliance
Verigear is committed to handling personal information in line with South Africa’s Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA). We only collect information necessary for the purposes described above, keep it only as long as needed to operate the registry, and apply reasonable technical safeguards to protect it against loss, unauthorised access, or disclosure. You may request access to, correction of, or deletion of your personal information at any time by contacting us.
We don’t sell your data
We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal information to third parties. Information you submit is used solely to operate Verigear’s stolen-gear verification service.
Cookies and sessions
We use a session cookie to keep you signed in. We don’t use third-party advertising or tracking cookies.
